Jimi Hendrix’ Career
The world would forever be changed on November the 27th, 1942, when James Marshall Hendrix was born. Jimi Hendrix is not only revered as perhaps the single greatest influence of electric guitar players around the world, but also as the founder of a style of guitar playing all his own. Jimi Hendrix was so good, that he is still honored in the Rock and Roll hall of fame with only a short 4 year career.
He had begun playing guitar at the age of 15, and it was always a passion for him. He was born in Seattle, Washington to his parents, James Allen Ross Hendrix, and Lucille Jeter in 1942. His father was serving active duty in the military during World War II, and thus began Jimi’s struggle. He was raised by a variety of people during his earliest childhood years, and when his father returned from the military and attempted to reunite his family, things only got worse. Unable to find a steady job or beneficial income, the family became destitute. This led to alcoholism and many nights of Jimi’s parents arguing and fighting, sometimes causing him to hide in a closet.
Yet, despite his turbulent childhood, Hendrix was able to turn pure passion into some of the best electric guitar skills the world has yet to see. His music, while very old now, is still cherished by young and old alike. One of his friends had described his guitar playing as that of John Lee Hooker combined with Beethoven. After Hendrix tried his hand at the army himself, he and his superiors soon realized that the army just wasn’t for him. He was honorably discharged and it wasn’t long after when he began his early music career.
In 1963, Hendrix made a move from the west coast to the east coast. He moved to Tennessee and began playing various gigs with his friend Billy Cox. This is how he made his living for a while, and although he received some attention there, he soon grew tired of the confines of other band member’s decisions. He turned his attention northwards and moved to Harlem, New York in 1964. There he met a woman named Lithofayne Pridgon, who had many connections in the music industry in Harlem and was a great key to his eventual success. Soon after this new relationship, he performed at the Apollo Theater for an amateur contest and won first prize with his electric guitar mastery. Four years later, his career really took off and he formed his band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Known all throughout the world for his one of a kind guitar playing, Jimi Hendrix is considered by many to be a credit to both guitar and to rock and roll blues. It wasn’t just that he could play the guitar very well and with such control, but that he also pioneered using sound effects that, at that time, were otherwise thought to be unfavorable. He created a style of playing like no other, and Jimi Hendrix’s life was well lived before his untimely death in 1970 at the young age of 27, and is one of the most famous ‘members’ of the 27 club.
